Bisphosphonates and Esophageal Cancer

Currently the FDA issued a bisphosphonate use and esophageal cancer. They are currently reviewing published studies and to date has not been established that there is an increased risk of esophageal cancer with the use of bisphosphonates.

FDA advises physicians that there is no sufficient data to recommend screening endoscopy for patients who do not have symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chest pain, worsening heartburn, or difficulty or pain when swallowing.

The FDA also noted that esophagitis and other problems associated with the esophagus does occur in patients who do not follow the specific instructions for the use of oral bisphosphonates.

      Instructions for taking oral bisphosphonates:
     1. Take on an empty stomach first in the morning.
     2. Take the pill with a ½ to 1 cup water
     3. Do not eat for at least 30 minutes.
     4. Remain upright either sitting or standing for 30 minutes after taking the pill
     5. Do not eat calcium foods 2 hours before or after taking medicine
